The First 8 Weeks
Well I finally have time to write a blog! Classic of a new mother right? No time for anything. I feel like when I have a "free" moment there are other things I need to do rather than write. Like dishes. Meh. There is just always something to do but before I started back at work I would take that free time to snuggle with my baby. I felt guilty if she was awake and I wasn't staring at her. When she was asleep was my real "free" time. But when that came I felt like I needed a break to just sit and decompress. And next thing you know the baby is hungry again and I got nothing done. Now that I am back at work I feel like every waking moment I need to be by her so she does not forget me. That leaves barely any time for anything else. Since my work day keeps me out out of the house for 11 hours. Depressing but that is life right? I have to work to support this new tiny human. My husband works as well but these days you cannot survive on one pay check. If you do it please feel free to share your secrets.
Anyway, as an update from my last blog my nipples have survived 8 weeks. Shortly after my last blog I was able to get a medicated nipple cream, which did wonders! My nipples healed up and now my baby can latch like a pro with no twinges of pain from me. This is major progress. However, I am upset my lactation specialist never told me it was normal to have pain when you first start breastfeeding. She always managed to make me feel like I was broken and was doing it wrong. But I am here to tell you that most likely your nipples will bleed. It will feel like razor blades every time your baby latches. You will crack teeth from biting down so hard. I was jealous of the ladies that threw their babies on their boob with one hand, no cringing, carrying on a conversation like it was nothing. Well, I can do that now so hah!
I also had my first public boob leak. Hid it with my sweater. So that happened. So lets talk about maternity leave. I got 6 weeks of unpaid FMLA leave. I did use ALL my saved up sick and vacation time to get paid for 3 weeks. After that it was pinch all the pennies we had saved. I was also lucky to work from home for weeks 7 and 8. But sadly I had to return to the office after that. I miss my baby so much while away. Who would have guessed, me liking children?
Harper also received her first set of shots. Yup, we vaccinated, take that you hippies. She handled that like champ other than she also has her first cold. So between the shots and a cold she was a little sad for a day. She smiles a lot and chats up a storm. We found out her favorite color is yellow and she likes elephants. (No she doesn't really talk yet, that is what we interpreted her coos as. Duh.) Her hair is longer than all the babies in the world. And its red. Like whoa. I mean with her good looking parents she was bound to be a delicious baby.
All week I had ideas for this blog and wrote it in my head and now that I have been interrupted 20 times by an inconsolable baby, I have lost my writing mojo. Well hopefully my tidbits were amusing. Heres a pic of this adorable Fiery Beebs!
